Nordic SmartBox 2.0 is a further development of the prizewinning technical platform Nordic SmartBox. The platform is a complete system for operation and control of demanding security and building management applications. The Nordic SmartBox 2.0 system consists of a communication unit which interacts with various alarm sensors, sensors for monitoring (e.g. of temperature in refrigerators) and nodes for control of lighting and heating.

One interesting feature is the wireless bidirectional communication, which enables all components of the system to really interact intelligently. The resulting system intelligence by far supersedes the sum of each individual component intelligence.

The various parts of the system communicate with each other and exchange intelligent information through special software and a tiny radio modem, the size of which is smaller than a matchbox.

This radio modem is integrated in, or connected close to, each unit in a SmartBox system. The radio communication is encrypted which makes it virtually impossible for unauthorized people to take control of the traffic, thus disabling the system.

In addition to the two-way radio modem, the Nordic SmartBox 2.0 system for local system communication uses Bluetooth technology. But most interesting is probably the possibility of interactive communication with the system, regardless of distance. All you need to monitor the building remotely is an ordinary GSM mobile telephone with a WAP/SMS function. In the hands of the user, it becomes a personal and mobile alarm centre, enabling you to receive alarms, turn on, off or control functions anywhere and at any time. Because the WAP server is built-in in the Nordic Smartbox, it is independent of external WAP servers. Therefore, communication between a mobile telephone and the Nordic SmartBox 2.0 is extremely fast, without the sluggishness that so far has been typical for WAP applications.

The Nordic SmartBox also communicates with the user through SMS (built-in SMS-server). On a local level, at the protected area, Nordic SmartBox 2.0 communicates wirelessly with a PDA (Compaq Ipaq). The PDA, incorporating Nordic Alarms intelligent radio modem, handles graphic presentation and SMS messaging.
